My Dad

My dad loved to have a good time and make people laugh. Can you tell? This was some time in 1951 when he was stationed in Germany with the Supply Division.

Me and my dad--I wasn't quite a year old yet. But we look pretty happy together, don't we? We always had a good time together.

This next picture was taken in 1966 (we think):

And this one in 1969:

My dad's "spot" in the living room was his recliner. While the recliner changed over the years, it was always "Dad's chair". Sometimes he shared it with me, sometimes he shared it with Mom:

And sometimes he shared it with the dog:

I miss you, Dad. I will always love you.

Happy Birthday. Have a slice of cake for me.

"Somebody should tell us, right at the start of our lives, that we are dying. Then we might live life to the limit, every minute of every day. Do it! I say. Whatever you want to do, do it now! There are only so many tomorrows." ~Pope Paul VI

  2. Thanks so much, Felicia. The hardest thing in all of this is thinking about my mom being alone now. She has her orders to stay healthy and be with us for a long time yet. :)

  5. Thanks, Jenna. I *do* look like my dad, right down to my manly hands. *G* Of the four kids, I'm the only one who ended up with his blue eyes.

  6. Cathy, like all relationships, there are good memories and bad ones. But now that he's gone I'm going to choose to remember only the good ones. :)

  7. What wonderful pictures. My mom passed when I was 11. That was 35 yrs ago and I miss her more today than I did then. Thank you for sharing your memories.

  8. Hi, Glenna. My dad was ornery and could hold a grudge like nobody's business, but in the end he could always make me laugh.

  10. Thanks, Jennybrat. I know eventually the sharpness of the loss will fade, but I'll always miss not being able to talk to him.

He was supposed to live forever, dammit.

  14. Sorry on the lose of your Dad especially since it is so close to a lot of your family special times.

Just remember that you have a lot of people that care for you. Even I forget that some times

  15. Sherrill I lost my dad a few years back and though he was not always easy to love, he taught me a lot and I choose to remember the things that mattered between us. Remember him to people who knew him and share stories with people who did not. You get to spend some time with him when you do.

  18. Michele, my dad could be a difficult man to love, too. Hard to talk to. But he had a lot of wisdom that he *did* share.

  21. Thank you, Stephanie. I think he was proud of me. He never said so, but if he had been unhappy, he would've let me know *that*, and he never did. :)

  23. Sherrill,
My thoughts are with you and your family in this difficult time. He will never really leave you though, as long as you keep him in your heart.

  24. Thanks, Beth. I am the youngest and was very much a daddy's girl, especially when I was younger. Unless Mom was around... LOL

Tori, thank you. A tribute is all I can do for him now.

Thank you, too, Janet. I appreciate your kind words. :)

  27. Thank you, December. Some of my best memories of my dad are of him sitting (or sleeping!) in his recliner. :)

  28. {{{{{Sherrill}}}}} These are such wonderful pictures, Sherrill. They tell such a story without words (obviously). As I sit here blubbering, I feel for your loss and I revel in your love and your father's evident love for you. You will have many, many moments in your life that will remind you of your dad, and eventually your tears will accompany the smiles that come to you first in remembering. peace, love, and hugs, friend ~Su

  30. I'm still weeping (and I see you've already responded!). But it just occurred to me why I am so moved by the photos you posted. On a child/parent level, it may not be as obvious, but on a spouse level I understand: I see your father's love for you in his eyes, in his smile... the way I see my husband's love for our children in *his* eyes, in *his* smile when he is pictured with them. And, oh, let me tell you sweetie, that is a love and a pride that runs *so* deep, maybe only a spouse can see and feel it for sure. Don't ever doubt his love for you, or his pride in you, even though he couldn't phone you. As his child, maybe it's just on a different wavelength or something. But your mother understands. {{{{more hugs}}}} ~Su
